Normally, people would think that a person with autism is simply how they are portrayed in the media. They are not! They are capable of many things just like you and me. Sir TJ, for instance, joined a triathlon and even won.
These people are not burdens to their families. They can be part of our working society and live by their own means. One of the people that we have interviewed is currently working as a professional in Communicare as one of the therapists. Some are working as accountants or even programmers.
Society thinks that they are incapable of feeling emotions and are numb to the unkind things that are said and done to them, but these things are ingrained in their memories; as we have observed from the people we have interviewed.
Other people would think that they have no empathy or compassion, but they do. They are sweet and loyal once their trust is gained. So once they consider you their friends, they will show thoughtfulness and generosity. Once you make an impact in their lives, they will never forget you.
With proper training, social skills can be taught. Neurodivergent people have difficulty in understanding social cues which is why we need to interact with them through awareness and open-mindedness.
One way or another, we have experienced all of these. But the suffering we experience occurs to them tenfold, especially in a society that fails to understand them. Not only is it difficult for them but also their loved ones who are hurt by seeing them being treated poorly. What they need most is a kind and accepting environment.
LET US BREAK THE STIGMA TOGETHER!
WILL YOU ACCEPT THEM?
AWARENESS IS THE FIRST STEP OF BREAKING IT!
